I'm sure that all Managers know that they face challenges in this new economy and the situation is not likely to improve anytime soon. That's why those in a Managers Job need good Planning For Success In Today's Economy.
What are they likely to face and how are they planning to improve their performance, adapt to the changing conditions and overcome unforeseen obstacles?
Here's a good Template Managers can use to ensure success that will help them improve, adapt and overcome to the challenges and obstacles they will likely face.
First, consider the Definition of what success would look like if it happened today? Make sure that all the people on the Team agree to what success looks like. Make sure they agree on what the Goals are, and what the Rules to accomplishing them are as well.
Secondly, assess who the Stakeholders and Players are, this may change from day to day. Who wins and who loses if the Goals are not achieved and the Rules are not followed. Every morning you will need to take stock of what the changes to your plan are.
Thirdly, ensure you are clear how the Goal is to be Executed, how will you achieve your Goal. Even if you follow the Rules, there's likely to be a thousand ways to reach your Goal. Who is going to Execute what, when. Again this may change every day or even every hour.
Fourth, what are the Milestones? How do you know when your doing well and when your in trouble? This is like looking at your speedometer, how fast are you going? Are you schedule to succeed or not?
Fifth, what are your Resources? Do you have enough to last until you have reached your Goal. Have you consumed your supplies at a greater rate than expected? Make it a point to inventory your Resources daily, or even sooner if necessary.
Sixth, ask yourself what are your Contingencies? If anyone of these points in this template fail, what are your Contingencies? What do you do if you spend six weeks working on a Goal and you begin to consume your supplies. Than you or someone else finds that they weren't clear about what the Goal was. Than you start over only to realize you've lost six weeks supplies.
As a minimum every Manager should ask and answer the above questions. And their subordinates should be able to answer these questions as well to ensure the task and the procedures to accomplish the task are clear to all levels of the organization.
