Thousands of vegetable plants are being dumped as Weribee’s water supply dries up.

Lettuce and cauliflower seedlings worth millions of dollars are being tossed with growers failing to secure water supplies.

Fresh produce prices were expected to begin creeping up as production in Werribee in wound back.

Southern Rural Water has offered the growers cheap irrigation water within weeks if they agree to use recycled water in future years.

At a crisis meeting on Wednesday night, water chiefs set a 16-hour deadline for growers to take treated sewage, bringing forward the initial cut-off by a week.

International food giant Burns Philp has failed to translate a steep rise in  revenue into a better bottom line, announcing net profit has fallen 9.3 per cent in the six months to December 31.

The company, which recently bought out Goodman Fielder in a $2 billion-plus deal and had a $2.6 billion debt on its books at the end of 2003, yesterday announced a half-year net profit of $86.3 million.

That was down 9,3 per cent on the previous corresponding period and was off revenue that was up by 164 per cent on the previous corresponding period, to $1.86 billion.

The beef industry is facing a new threat as its largest export market, Japan, prepare to impose punitive tariffs on the $1.5 billion Australian beef trade.

The action, likely to start from August1, will increase the tariff on beef exported to Japan from 38.5 per cent to 50 per cent. It will apply until April 2004.

The protectionist measure is designed to curb Japan’s beef imports, which are beginning to recover after slumping dramatically last year following the bovine spongiform encephalopathy disease scandal in Japan in September 2001.

Daniel Goleman's article, Leadership That Gets Results, is one of the best articles from the Harvard Business Review archives. As the noted author of the book, Emotional Intelligence, Goleman combines his expertise in emotional intelligence with research on leadership styles done by the consulting firm, Hay/McBer. Their research uncovers six distinct leadership styles. Goleman concludes that there is no one best style, but the best leaders use their emotional intelligence to determine which style will best fits their specific situation. He describes each of the leadership styles, their advantages and disadvantages, and offers some brief examples of how a leader might apply the style. Every leader or aspiring leaders should understand each of these styles and how they can be used:

Coercive Style: This is a compliance focused style that is characterized by the phrase "Do what I tell you." Although this style works well in extreme circumstances of a crisis or turnaround, in most cases it will have a negative impact on the overall organization once the crisis is past.

For years, mobile phone users have lamented their inability to switch carriers without losing their 10-digits call number. But come September 25, this is set to change when the veil is lifted on mobile number portability (MNP).

For business most particularly, the cost of changing has far out-weight the benefits of gaining a better deal on price.

But MNP – the right to change service providers and keep your phone number - will allow pre-paid and contract mobile phone subscribers, along with small to medium enterprise (SME) and larger corporate customers, to pick and choose their way through the carrier landscape brandishing a mobile telephone number no-one can take away. Telstra Corp, as the Australian market’s dominant player with 45 percent of the industry, has the most to lose.

Every armchair Sport fan has his or her dream. It might be to go to the Wimbledon final, perhaps the US Masters. Mine has always been to go to the World Cup to see English in the final.

This year, was to be the chance. With the finals in Japan and South Korea and living in Australia it seemed the perfect opportunity.

You applied through FIFA's website and the three-match package was $US330. More than I had ever paid for football tickets, but who cares?

Six Sigma Training

There are many different way a person can go about getting their six sigma training and subsequently becoming Six Sigma Certified. The first and the easiest for medical business professionals is Six Sigma Online Certification. This is because online learning is a self-paced program that many professionals can do on their own time and without worrying about missing the work they are already committed to. They may also be able to get through the training faster than other forms of traditional training. Another benefit of online training is its cost-effectiveness. It is usually significantly less expensive than onsite training.

Do you like paying overdraft fees? Of course, not - nobody does. In fact, even those bank customers who logically can understand why banks feel they have to charge overdraft fees resent having to pay them when the time comes.

Paying overdraft fees, for most people, is a bit like paying a parking or speeding ticket. You did something wrong, you knew it was wrong, and now you have to pay the price.

The trouble with the whole overdraft fee system that most major banks have in place has to do with a lack of transparency. In other words: most bank customers who sign up for overdraft protection programs do not really have a complete grasp of how the programs work.

Malaysian engineer Tony Yap still hasn’t worked out to tell his youngest daughter, Jasmine, that she won’t be studying in Australia next year.

The all-conquering Australian dollar has made it impossible to send her to study in Victoria. Her two elder siblings have been studying in Australia for the past two years.

‘The Aussie dollar is so strong that I can hardly afford to keep my other two children in Australia, let alone send my youngest. It is a tragedy as she is the brightest of the lot,’ says Yap.
