The art of negotiation may not come easy to everyone, but it is a skill you should utilize. Here are some benefits other than salary for you to negotiate with your employer.

Education

When it is time for your meeting with your employer or prospective employer you may want to consider discussing continuing education. Some companies have tuition reimbursement programs already in place. However, you can also negotiate classes or courses not typically included in these programs.

Perhaps you can pursue some career enhancement workshops or classes.

Schedule

A flexible schedule is a wonderful benefit to negotiate. Many employees are successful in some flexible work arrangements. There are several options to explore in a flexible schedule.

Some of the options are compressed schedule, family-friendly flexible time and telecommuting. A compressed schedule is when an employee works the specified number of hours in a shorter period of time. If you have children, you may want to consider a family-friendly flexible schedule so that you can enjoy special activities with your children as needed.

Health And Wellness

Employee wellness has become an important issue for many companies. Many companies are willing to negotiate some additional health and wellness benefits. If health insurance is an issue for you during your interview you can possibly shorten your waiting period to enroll in the company's benefits.

Some other wellness benefits are overhauling the vending machines, providing bottled water or access to a water cooler. Some companies are striving to reduce employee stress so discussing on-site massage therapy, yoga or access to an on-site fitness area could also be beneficial perks.

Vacation Time

Many workers do not realize that they can negotiate more time off. For many, this is just as important as the salary you end up with. If you are not satisfied with the salary that was offered you can sometimes negotiate extra paid vacation time. Some companies will consider a worker's request to arrange more unpaid time off as well.

This may be appealing to those with children or illnesses that take them away from work more often.

Dress Code

Depending on your company and profession you may be able to discuss a more casual dress code. Many companies have a casual day, but often if your client contact is limited you can arrange a casual dress code every day.
