If you're looking to build a small company website, but you don't have any web knowledge you've come to the right place. This article will help show you the first things you need to learn and do to get a website off the ground and start working for you.
In this article I'll be talking about two kinds of small company websites. The first kind is the "business card" website. Some folks need a website to put on their business card to give a bit more information about their business, to help increase the legitimacy of their business and perhaps put photos of their work. These small 2, 3, and 4 page websites can be great for local use only. Landscapers for example, may just want a site so they can be found when people in their town search for "their town name + landscapers".
There are several template website design companies on the internet that can help you get this done very cheaply, without needing to know anything and with little to no maintenance. Only do this if that's all you plan to accomplish with your website. Another great way to accomplish this - though it takes a wee more effort is through a blog. A blog doesn't have to be a listing of posts categorized by day or keyword. There are many free templates you can upload to a blog to really make it have a "corporate" feel.
One of the benefits of the blog platform is the customization you can do, free tools you can instantly add to the site and the ability to have complete control of the content. Some like WordPress.com are totally free - no costs whatsoever just your time putting it together. Others like WordPress.org require you to get a domain name, have the domain name hosted and then have a little bit of web knowledge to get it up and running.
The second type of website is for individuals who want to be found on the internet. If you're a landscaper and you'd like your website to pop up in Google when someone searches for "landscaping ideas", this second site is for you. To come up in Google you really need great content based on searches people are already doing on the internet. To do this alone without any help, you'd really need good keyword analysis tools, keyword density tools and other marketing analyzers.
Some of the content based website development packages come with all that included making it fantastically easy for the user who doesn't know anything about website development. For instance, suppose you just typed out a page called "landscaping the front walkway", some of these sites have buttons that say "analyze" which you press and it tells you how many more times you need to use the words "landscaping the front walkway" or if you've used them too much. They'll tell you where to put your keywords - it's all very easy for the novice to understand.
The key to using this method is to do what their tools suggest. Based on thousands of sites reaching #1 on Google, it doesn't make sense to write about "landscaping the front walkway" if the analyzer is telling you that most people search for "landscaping sidewalks". The key is to be found by searchers, provide good information and be someone they trust for their 'landscaping' needs. Let these types of packages help you make the best of your site.
